Adventure in the Hills: Ella & the Waterfalls

Ella is where the island exhales. The hills here are steep and green in a way that photographs badly and feels incredible in person — you have to actually stand at the edge of Little Adam\\\'s Peak or Ella Rock, wind pulling at your jacket, to understand it.

Hike up early and the tea estates below unroll like a green quilt, stitched together by narrow footpaths and the occasional grazing cow that clearly owns the trail more than you do. Come down the other side and chase one of the region\\\'s waterfalls — Ravana Falls, thundering down in the wet season, or the quieter Diyaluma, where natural infinity pools sit at the top of one of the island\\\'s tallest drops (not for the faint-hearted, and absolutely worth it for those who go).

And then there\\\'s the train. The Ella–Kandy stretch is often called one of the most beautiful rail journeys anywhere, and it earns the title honestly — blue-and-red carriages easing through tunnels, over the arched Nine Arch Bridge, and along ridgelines with a drop that makes your stomach do something interesting. Hang out the open doorway (carefully), let the tea country roll by, and you\\\'ll understand why people plan entire trips around this one train ride.
