Down South Beach Experience

The south coast has a rhythm all its own, and it starts before sunrise.

Out past the surf, wooden poles rise from the shallow water like skeletal umbrellas — and perched on top of them, almost impossibly balanced, are the stilt fishermen of Sri Lanka. It\\\'s one of the most photographed traditions on the island, and for good reason: a man sitting cross-legged on a narrow crossbar a few feet above the waves, fishing rod in hand, completely at ease in a position that looks like it shouldn\\\'t be possible. Fewer fishermen do this for their livelihood now, but the tradition survives, held up — quite literally — by those who still take to the poles at dawn and dusk.

A short drive away, the story shifts from balance to patience. On quiet stretches of southern beach, turtle conservation projects protect nesting sites and hatch baby turtles in safe, monitored hatcheries. If the timing is right, you might get to release a hatchling into the surf yourself — a tiny, determined creature making its first and most dangerous journey, cheered on by a small crowd of strangers who, for a minute, are all rooting for the same thing.
